Down Syndrome Facts
Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic condition caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21 which is thought to arise by chance. It occurs at an approximate rate of 1 in 700 and is one of the most common chromosomal conditions in human beings. About six thousand babies are born with Down syndrome in the United States each year.
The condition is associated with delays in physical growth, characteristic facial features and some degree of intellectual disability. Parents of people born with Down syndrome usually do not have Down syndrome themselves, but the likelihood of a child being born with the condition increases as the mother’s age increases. There is no cure for Down syndrome.

There are many ways for people to observe and participate in Down Syndrome Awareness Month. These include 31 random acts of kindness (one for each day of the month), volunteering with a Down Syndrome advocacy organization, or joining one of 250 Walks with friends which take place across the country during the month of October. Additionally, the National Down Syndrome Society recommends creating a Facebook fundraiser, sending Down Syndrome Awareness Month e-cards to friends and family, and sharing facts about Down Syndrome on social media as other great ways to get involved.
