Dentist to provide free treatment to children with special needs once a month

A Dubai-based dentist pays it forward by offering one special needs child free treatment per month, regardless of the cost of the procedure.

Dr. Garima Khandelwal, a specialist pediatric dentist, works in several clinics in Dubai. Since most dental treatments are not covered by insurance, the Indian expat pointed out that the procedures can be expensive if multiple teeth are affected.

“It’s very helpful for families, as already a lot of expense is involved with children with special needs,” Dr Khandelwal said.

Speaking about her decision to offer the initiative during the holy month of Ramadan, she said, “I think Ramadan is a very auspicious month to be more generous and helpful and spread the kindness of humanity whose world has need”.

Her first patient during Ramadan was three-year-old Justine from the Philippines. “The child had a neurological disability called Rett syndrome. I performed two pulpectomies and eight fillings on 10 teeth under full anesthesia,” Dr Khandelwal said.

Highlighting the cost of these treatments, she added that dental procedures are particularly expensive for children with special needs. “Dental treatments start low, but if the complications are more severe, it can cost upwards of Dh40,000. And once a month I will provide treatment to a child with special needs, regardless of the cost. “

Dr Khandelwal said she planned to continue the initiative for as long as she could. The Ministry of Health and Prevention of the United Arab Emirates awarded him the Innovative Doctor of the Year award in 2020 for his technique for treating small cysts without surgery.
