The Care Quality Commission asked Versita Care to improve

A care agency in BASINGSTOKE has been told it needs to improve following an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Versita Care Limited, based in Roman Road, Winklebury, was visited by the health watchdog in April and a report published this month classified it as ‘needs improvement’ overall.

The agency provides personal support for people with mental and behavioral disabilities in two shared houses in a housing estate.

At the time of the inspection, five people were using the service who all had their own bedroom with a shared living room, kitchen and bathrooms.

Inspectors found that Versita “did not have a robust policy in place to ensure that new employees were recruited after the necessary checks”.

The report added: “The supplier had failed to inform us of the events to be notified which it required under the legislation.

“Risk assessments were in place and steps were taken to reduce risk. However, we noted that two specific risks had been identified but there was insufficient information available to mitigate the risks.

The CQC also found that the supplier did not follow current government guidelines regarding the use of personal protective equipment and Covid-19 testing.

The report indicates that the registered manager immediately responded to the issues and made changes.

“For example, after highlighting current government guidelines, they told us that staff had resumed wearing face masks,” the report said.

Inspectors found Versita to be “good” in three categories: efficient, caring, and responsive.

However, he found that it “needed improvement” in two areas: safe and well-run.

The report says the service has been able to demonstrate how it adheres to the “fundamental principles” of legal guidance when it comes to providing support for people with learning disabilities and/or people with autism.

“People’s needs have been assessed to ensure the provider can meet people’s needs before they agree to provide care and support. The supplier made sure there was enough staff to meet people’s assessed needs,” the inspectors said.

The CQC also found that the provider worked with other agencies to ensure people’s needs were met; people were helped to take their medications by staff who had received medication training; and people were supported by staff who treated them kindly.

The report says: “Staff encouraged people to participate in decision-making about their care. Staff respected people’s privacy and dignity.

Care plans were found to be “individual and personalized”, while people were “supported to prepare and cook their own meals”.

The CQC has found Versita to be in breach of regulations regarding new staff security checks, and has been asked to create an action to identify how it will improve “quality and security standards”.

The CQC said: “We will work alongside the supplier to monitor progress. We will continue to monitor the information we receive on the service, which will help inform during our next inspection.

Versita Care was asked to comment.
